Engine and Gearbox

Engine:
The engine is a 63 HP – 4-203 Perkins diesel.

Engine Cooling:
The engine is fresh-water cooled. The engine and heat exchangers hold approximately 2-gallons of antifreeze. The water pump is driven off the same belt as the motor alternator.

A Sherwood raw water pump is engine driven thru a Lovejoy Coupling located on the port side of the motor. It draws seawater thru a hull inlet strainer and a ball valve and thru a Perko Strainer. The water then cools the transmission heat exchanger and the engine oil heat exchanger before going thru the engine heat exchanger and the exhaust manifold where it exits the boat thru a water-jacketed exhaust pipe to a muffler then overboard.

Replacing the antifreeze (engine coolant) is done by opening a small bleed cock near the left rear corner of the engine block. This is the lowest point in the system. The attached hose allows the antifreeze easily be collected in a jug for disposal.

Engine Lubrication:
Oil is carried in a standard wet sump with a standard Perkins submerged oil pump. The system incorporates a dual remote oil filter unit mounted off to the side of the motor for ease of filter changes. The system holds approximately 7 quarts of oil (depending on what size oil filters are used).

Changing the engine oil is done with the 'Reverso' oil pump located by the right side of the engine on the engine cover frame. The attached hose allows the old oil to be collected in a jug for disposal.

Gearbox:
The Gearbox is a Borg-Warner Velvet Drive with reduction gear

Fuel System:
There are 2 independent fuel systems aboard Shambhala

Fuel is carried in two 50-gallon steel tanks located under the cockpit sole. Each tank has a large inspection port in the front for physical cleaning. Each tank has a small sump at the lowest part with a ball valve at the bottom for purging the tanks of water, etc. Each tank is equipped with a sight glass and gauge for easily determining the quantity of fuel remaining. Accidental leakage of fuel from a damaged sight glass is prevented by the ball valve at the bottom of each sight glass tube.

There are two Facet Electric Fuel Pumps located under the floor on the bulkhead under the companionway ladder. These pumps draw fuel from the tanks thrrough two Alge-X fuel filters and two Racor-500 water separators (with 2-micron filters) and deliver it to the engine thru a manifold valve system and a CAV fuel filter on the side of the motor block. Excess fuel is returned to the appropriate tank via the same manifold system.

The fuel manifold valves allow fuel to be 'polished' without the necessity of hiring it done. There is also an extra valve between the fuel tanks, which allows the transfer of fuel from one tank to another or the ability of drawing fuel from either tank with either fuel pump.

Easy Engine Access and maintenance
